Funky? What's funky?

Morning all.
The ongoing weekly challenges over at Through The Purple Haze had me reaching for the dictionary. Week 7 and the challenge title is "Funky Girls and Boys" !!
Well the first definition was an unusual theme to say the least
1. a. Having a mouldy or musty smell: funky cheese; funky cellars.
b. Having a strong, offensive, unwashed odour.
They can't mean that. I looked on further... relating to Music
2. a. Of or relating to music that has an earthy quality reminiscent of the blues.
b. Combining elements of jazz, blues, and soul and characterized by syncopated rhythm and a heavy, repetitive bass line.
ok and reading the last bit......
3. Slang Earthy and uncomplicated; natural: "At the opposite end of Dallas's culinary spectrum is funky regional fare" (Jacqueline Friedrich).
4. Slang
a. Characterized by originality and modishness; unconventional: "a bizarre, funky [hotel ] dressed up as a ship, with mock portholes and mirrored ceilings over the beds" (Ann Louise Bardach).
b. Outlandishly vulgar or eccentric in a humorous or tongue-in-cheek manner; campy: "funky caricatures of sexpot glamour" (Pauline Kael).

Food for thought. Well the sponsor of the challenge this week is Kenny K so I went with section 2 - music - hence the music DP and the colour blue in this card and section 4 - unconventional with a caricature of sexpot glamour.

Kenny K does draw quite a few girls that fall into the category of sexpot glamour. I opted for one of the Steampunk girls - Lady Victoria. Coloured with promarkers.

I teamed her with some steampunk papers from the chronology range from docrafts and a piece from the DCWV heritage stack. Opting for an unconventional blue and brown/rust colour scheme and using the sketch over at Sweet Sketch Wednesday as my inspiration.

I 

The flowers are a mixture of paper flowers and copper coloured cog die cuts in my stash with copper brads to attach. Ribbon and lace also in stash. The sentiment was stamped onto some little arrow diecuts that were then coloured with blue DI.

Design Team Throwdown with RSD - August 2013

Good afternoon all

I don't know how many design team members have heard of the monthly throwdown between different teams and, until this month, it has always been held within the Smeared and Smudged forum. Everything has now entered blogland in an effort to encourage more participation both from other Design Teams and from the general crafting community.  The blog that has been created for this special challenge can be found here.

This month I'm playing for Rick St Dennis', Airless Chambers team.
The challenge theme chosen for this month by last month's winners, the awesome team over at Quoth The Raven is

how each person interprets this is just one of the beauties of this.
The Airless Chambers team this month consists of Miranda, Suzi and myself. The other girls have created the most amazing projects and if you came here from anywhere other than Airless Chambers can I suggest you take a detour and go look.
I hope you're sitting comfortably as, with all 3-D objects, this is going to be picture heavy.
I started off with a rather pain looking hinged wooden shrine - just over 4" wide closed and about 7" high

Painted it a light/mid grey colour and then the decorating began.


after masking off a brick pattern and applied gesso mixed with acrylic paint. Went over it all again after removing the masking so that the stone work was not
as uniform.



The centre archway was given a separate coat - darker in colour. Some green flocking was also added to simulate moss.

The other side.
The front of my piece, as closed, was covered with polyfiller. A cheaper alternative to modelling paste and this was handy. Horizontal lines pressed in and some skulls and real chicken bones embedded into the "brickwork". Then the boring bit - waiting for this all to dry before painting.
A base coat of black then loads of different shades of grey and this emerges

The back was covered in a paper from the now, unfortunately, closed shop of Crafty Chaos. As it is a digi paper, I could adjust the colours and printed in black and white.
My images - well there are only two.

Count Meowt can be seen when the window on the back is opened. Coloured with just 5 shades of grey promarkers. A spider web stamp used on the card behind our peer.

The speech bubble - computer generated and torn out. Brushed with distress ink before attaching.
My other image is the Queen of Skulls. Coloured with a few more shades of grey than 5. haha

She was fussy cut out and attached to a black card back for the stability I needed.
Some nylon jewellery thread attached to the back and the other ends to the sides of the doors.

some dark grey seam binding attached on the edges to both neaten and add extra stability for those threads.

It's ATC time at Smudgy Antics

The start of a new challenge today over at Smudgy Antics, Really simple - make an ATC. A 2.5"x3.5" piece of art. What could be simpler than that? The hardest thing about it is choosing the stamps you'll use.
I chose 4 of the smaller stamps in the "Morte" rubber set and one of the larger for the background. Fabulous images drawn by Rick St Dennis exclusively for the Smeared Ink Rubber Club. I'm eagerly awaiting the second set and there are a further two sets coming out as well. More about them later.
My ATC

Some paper piecing and a lot of fussy cutting here. The goblet and the bottle in the foreground were stamped onto vellum. The goblet's skull was cut from cream coloured card 3 times, each layer slightly smaller and layered up. The decanter - the liquid was cut from some green paper and layered behind and the skull on top layered on top. Gold miri card cut for the decanter's stand. The candle on the skull at the back is also layered up. The trio of decanters cut from another scrap. The wall of skulls stamped onto the ATC them distress inked before layering my pieces onto the ATC.

 This shows the layers better.
Some small gems (3mm and 1mm) glued to the goblet where the stamp has them depicted.

Woo Hoo - Happy dance time

Guess what - and I don't care if it was Mr Random - he likes me today - I just had notification from Elaine over at Craft My Life - All Crafts Challenge that I was soon going to be taking delivery of some fabulous ribbons. I won the Crafty Ribbons prize in the recent re-launch Bloghop of the challenge site. This is one of the few challenges that accept my kind of crafting without batting an eyelid. Altered art, jewellery, fabric work - if it's crafty (except cards) it will be acceptable in their challenges. The list of sponsors that are lined up are amazing in their variety. This month's challenge, as usual is an "anything goes" and will run for all of August and September.
So to all my friends out there - get on over and get those projects linked up.

Dancing or Bingo?

I thought hard about the title for this post. Sometimes they just get boring. Anyway, it's week 6 of the challenges over at Through The Purple Haze. Still a long way to go for the big prize at the end of the year for entering all the challenges to that time, but I'm hanging in there.
This week is a bingo recipe.

Well. This is a challenge - three papers right in the centre. I struggle with one normally but did, in the end, opt for the centre line down.

The three papers are all from the DCWV Heirloom stack. A lovely collection of vintage/steampunk papers. That lace is actually printed on the paper - it looks so real, doesn't it. All matted onto pearlised gold card. 

I followed the sketch over at Sparkle Creations as my inspiration for the card. I wanted elegant for this gorgeous Rick St Dennis lady - Waltz.

 A length of dark brown velvet ribbon for opulance, some royal blue satin to match the hem of our dancing lady's dress and some narrow cream ribbon tied up in a big bow with a gorgeous flower in the centre.

Coloured with promarkers with perfect pearls painted onto the hem for that glamorous touch, some glossy accents for her jewels and gold glamour dust applied to the butterflies on her dress. 

Some pearls added (to tie in with the sketch and the bingo line. I did stamp a sentiment down the side, for good measure, using expresso ink.

Witch Mercedes

Hi peeps
I recently joined the Simply Betty fan page within facebook and they have just started this month's challenge. A digi image - Witch Mercedes - given away to those that request it before August 20th but request and not use ..... and the freebies stop coming your way.
Well I did get to use her - and, surprise surprise, a card popped up.

Hallowe'en colours are required in the challenge over on the Simply Betty blog and that's what we have here. Greens, oranges, purples and black.

Mercedes has been coloured using promarkers and mounted onto a couple of memory box tree die cuts then grey (x-cut). A MS cobweb punch for the spider webs and all over bazzil basics cats' eyes paper. The sentiment is part of the digi set.

It's All About The Balance

Morning all.
It's Rick St Dennis morning here in the Cubbyhole. Creative Corner Challenges are being sponsored for their current ANYTHING Goes challenge by Rick and the EDT were asked to guest as DT for them.

The card I made is using one of the super cute Scarecrows in the Hallowe'en section, available in Rick's Etsy Shop. The title of my post gives away his name - It's All About The Balance.

The little scarecrow was coloured with promarkers before cutting out and mounting onto dark green cardstock. The same card was used for the embossed sentiment and the mat. The sentiment reads "Be brave, step off the path, take a walk on the wild side" and is from a creative expressions set in my collection.
That BP - well that is made up of lots of 2" squares. I couldn't find a paper that I liked and wanted a kind of patchwork effect to match his trousers. Narrow DST applied to the joins then gold glamour dust rubbed on. I like the effect. Not too glittery - just enough.
I added some twine under his foot - as if he's walking a tightrope - it seemed fitting.

Some of the other girls in the EDT have made projects for the Creative Corner challenge and they can be seen all together over at the Sparkle and Glitter blog. It's always appreciated when some bloggy love is left and I'm sure the girls would love you to see their creations so, please do pop over.

Flowers and Butterflies

So we've had a break in the Cubbyhole yesterday from making projects of a "Darker Nature". This time it's the turn of the summery look to emerge. Not that we have much of a summer going on in this corner of Scotland. I have even resorted to putting the heating on on one evening. Others, I made do with a blanket wrapped round me. Whilst you lot are complaining of the heat, think of us here, and we still have winter to come. Oh well - that's Scotland for you!

Enough of my ramblings, this card was made for the challenge over at Through The Purple Haze. I'm still in the running for the grand prize at Christmas. Having been tasked to enter every challenge up to that time.
This week the challenge is all about Butterflies, Flowers and other garden lovelies. I suppose I could of added a few spiders to this card, but I resisted the urge. hahaha

 I have used two digi stamps from Delicious Doodles for this. Butterfly Border and Fern the Forest Fairy. I started off by printing the fairy image 5 times to get all the layers needed. My scanner wasn't working at this time so each layer was coloured. The butterfly border was printed twice onto white card then onto my base paper (the shop, Crafty Chaos, that sold this has now stopped trading unfortunately).
The butterflies and flowers, after colouring with promarkers, were paper-pieced onto the DP. Fern took a bit longer.

 Some glossy accents on her lips, the acorns in her hair and the toadstools and a touch of gold glamour dust.

The frame around Fern is just knotted ribbon attached by sewing whilst adding a few seed pearls on the way round.
Some lace, and more ribbon added to the base layers before the image layers. Some flowers, a butterfly charm and some pins came next. Then the sentiment, stamped onto a cut out circle then the left over images from the main panel printing. The layout was inspired by the sketch over at Passion for Promarkers.

Horrorscope and HDH with Delicious Doodles

It's the second week of our journey into the realms of the astrological plain at Haunted Design House. Teri, another of the HDH minions and her Delicious Doodles are sponsoring this fortnights challenge of

There are almost a complete set of Horoscope images and their darker counterparts "The Horrorscopes".
The shop is a must to visit - all genres catered for!!

My project is "just" a simple card. I couldn't and wouldn't want to detract from this fabulous image.
I chose "Pisces" as this is my birth sign. The image was copied and rotated to show the two fish as per tradition. That's where tradition stops though. Eight duplicate images were also printed and coloured so that I could decoupage up the delightful little fish.

 The ribbons are all from stash. The base card of a mucky green was given a black mat before some sanded coredinations (pre-embossed). Then the image - also with a black mat.

The image, as I said was printed onto the base card but before all the pieces were added it was given a bath in different distress inks

and showing the layers a bit better.

I need a new blade in my knife now, lol.

There's still a few days left to get those entries in peeps.

Burnt Offerings

No, I didn't burn the dinner. This is the theme of the challenge over at Smudgy Antics for the next 2 weeks.
The blurb on the blog is more eloquent than I can manage so I'll just c&p it here.

You may interpret the challenge theme anyway you choose.  For those attempting to use actual flame of some sort please use common sense and have a basin of water nearby as well a fire-extinguisher.  We don't want any injuries or burnt down homes in the making of your burnt offering projects.

Examples of Burnt Offerings include, but are not limited to, the following:

Burn the edging of your cardstock or a portion of your project.

Use a soot stamping technique.

Use a wood burning tool in some fashion on your project.

Use your heat gun to scorch areas of your project. 

Also acceptable, especially for the accident prone folks, are the following:

Use a faux Burnt technique.

Add faux flames to your project.

I'm sure there are other things, but I'll let you folks decide what to do.

My project this week - well to put it mildly, was beset by catastrophe. To the point when I went to seal it, my can sprayed out in a single spluttering stream and ruined the images. Back to the drawing board and a quicky make. Something I was going to do anyway but not quite yet, to make the covers for my fatbook pages that were made last week during the week-long Smudgefest.
So here we have them.
The technique I used was "Soot-stamping" and I have done a tutorial for this in the Smeared & Smudged forum.
The stamps used are from the Smeared Ink Zombie Graveyard for the alphabet and the As Death sets.

The DP is from Pink Paisley's Hocus Pocus collection. The letters were attached with and further coated with modpodge.

The DP here is from the BoBunny weekend market collection. The frame has been sitting in my stash for a while and this seemed the ideal project to use it on.

Smudgefest day 7 Finale

Evening all. I hope you are all sitting comfortably.

It's day 7 of the week long Smeared and Smudged Smudgefest being held over at Smudgy Antics this week. A week when each person has but one day to create a project and link it back to the blog after being told that day's challenge.

Today it's The Final Challenge. 

An image was supplied free just for today on the Smudgy Antics blog and a project was to be made using the specified image.

Another fat book page from me - 6 out of 7 days isn't bad.

I weaved different papers to form my BG then over stamped with some TH Hallowe'en stamps.

The image was printed out 5 times and decoupaged up. My melting pot has been "tidied away" and so second best option taken. Triple layered heat embossing with ordinary clear powder.

A little pumpkin from my stash and this toffee apple with a hint of devilment is ready for his audience.

What's a week long challenge extravaganza without a sketch challenge? Nothing, I tell ya! So, here it is...please use the sketch below as inspiration for your project. It does not have to be exact, but we must be able to tell that you got your idea from the sketch.

Well that's the brief. From me - another fatbook page. I will get this filled with this week's extravaganza.

The BP is from my bit box. The paper is from Delicious Doodles as a downloadable digi paper. One of many, this one is the Swirly Hearts.  Thank goodness for bit boxes. My pc is "not well" The hard drive is dead and I'm working on the bare minimum here and haven't got my normal programs installed on this temp machine. A scrap of (I think) MME for the image to rest on. That is, in fact, two images - masked one on top of each other. Both from the Morte Rubber set from Smeared Ink. Stamped in latte ink and coloured with promarkers and golden highlights with metallic markers.
The Cross and chain., lace and metal lacy corner in stash. The filigree corner started out as a bright silver colour but my inky fingers tell a tale of the alcohol inks used to colour it.
That's about it.
Back to this errant pc of mine to try and find the programs I need to install.

FLOWING FRIDAY

Create a project using a flowing medium. Some examples could be watercolor, liquid ink, liquid glues, thinned out acrylics, etc.... use your imagination and let the juices flow!

Another fatbook page has emerged from my crafty area for today's challenge. Even if I don't have a full weeks worth - I can insert pics of the other day's projects. (eg yesterday's ATC)

I used water colours and inks to colour my image.

This is the water Nymph from the Smeared Ink Nymph rubber set in my collection. The link is to the digi as the rubber is now unavailable. I stamped her using green stazon, inkeeping with my colour scheme.
Coloured, as I said with water colours and then dipped in watered down distress ink. Finally spritzed it with water and let it run.
The background is the secondary paint transfer from when I was creating my BG on Wednesday with my gelli plate.

image dry, I secured some fibres to the base and overlaid with the image. The shells are from stash. A touch of glitter.
Done.

Make an ATC with a "twist". You can interpret "twist" anyway 

My Twist - it's not just an ATC - it twists and turns and can be a source of much amusement. I made a "Jacob's Ladder" - ATC sized from the top. A Chunky ATC from the side and room for more embellishment/photos/ whatever.

The front/top cover features a stamp from the Smeared Ink "Urban Decay" set, Heat embossed and trimmed to fit.

Smudgefest - Day 3

Evening all. I hope you are all sitting comfortably.
It's day 3 of the week long Smeared and Smudged Smudgefest being held over at Smudgy Antics this week. A week when each person has but one day to create a project and link it back to the blog after being told that day's challenge.

Today the Challenge : WICKED WEDNESDAY

"It's a colour challenge! Use these wicked colours to create your project for today."

Well here they look like Burnt Umber, Mint Green, Lime Green, Bottle Green and Powder Blue. Later in the day the names of the colours were described as Brown, Seafoam, Lime Green, Black, Sky Blue. So I was quite close. There was black ink used so I hope that covers it.

I made yet another fatbook page. This way I can have all projects for the week gathered in one place.
The image - so many to choose from! My son chose the Smeared Ink Grumpies.  I had no problem with that.
I stamped the images on the required coloured card and fussy cut them out. Made a base paper using my gelli plate. Then started the gluing process. Oh and a die cut fence with an arch - trimmed to size.

TERRIFYING TUESDAY

Create a project that showcases your favourite scary Smeared Ink image. Go ahead, pull out all the stops and give us the willies!


Which stamp to choose? Had to think hard. In the end I went for one of the Zombies from the "Build a Zombie" rubber set. To add that extra bit(e) I had him trying to get in the window depicted in another of the stamps available. This one is from the Morte set (as drawn by Rick St Dennis and exclusive to Smeared Ink Rubber Club)

I stamped the window image onto acetate as well so that I could add the glass at the windows

The images were coloured with promarkers before all the fussy cutting was done.

Smudgy Antics Smudgefest Day 2 - Terrifying Tuesday

Smudgefest - day 1

For the third year running, Smeared and Smudged are hosting a week-long smudgefest - a chance to create quick projects - 24hrs is the maximum and enter into the draw to win a MASSIVE $200 prize from Smeared Ink. The daily challenges, together with more info are being posted on the Smudgy Antics blog so if anyone is looking to enter the normal 2 weekly challenge ( fussy-cut projects) a bit of scrolling will need to be done.
Today's Manic Monday challenge is titled "Bi-Polar" - all about opposites - and a fabulous example has been created by Black Kitten.

My entry features Mr Poe from the Smeared Ink "Quoth the Raven" rubber set as the main image. I also used the raven image from Rick St Dennis for my base paper. The elements on my fatbook page are all taken from the "Tic-Tac-Poe" grid from the challenge at Quoth The Raven challenge blog.

First up - the base paper. The RSD raven image was manipulated in a graphics program so that it, and it's mirror image were tiled before printing. Love the way the raven images form a heart shape like this.
Then the Smeared Ink Mr Poe was stamped on both black and white card, fussy cut out and cut, roughly, in half. The full image then re-constructed using one piece from each colour. The white ink on the black started to go grey, being absorbed into the black I think, so I painted over with acrylic paint and added some texture in the process.

Little flowers were each covered with black and white glitter and attached to Mr Poe's head. Doesn't he look sweet.

Some black and white tulle was stitched together and pleated. The join being covered by stitching on some black satin ribbon. There's another opposite The male EAP has been dressed as a girl, lol.
Some black and white lace and a couple of feathers before our leading character, and that's all the elements of that grid covered.

Need A Hug ?

It's four weeks into the challenge at Through the Purple Haze Challenge Blog to make a project every week to be entered into the draw for a massive prize. After almost giving myself a heart attack in the second week and only just squeaking in before the deadline, I have taken full advantage of the "pre-warning" of the next week's challenge theme that is given in their facebook group. I was able to get this card finished early and ready to post. This week is going to be a busy one.
There is also blog candy up for grabs - once they hit 100 followers. The link is on my side bar as well incase you get lost.

The theme this week is Cards With Tickets or Tags with Crafty Sentiments sponsoring.  Well, I don't have any Crafty Sentiments products - but that doesn't matter. No tickets either but didn't want to use a tag. So I made my own tickets with the aid of my pc, printer and perforating disc on my cutter. The card ............sorry about the light - seems the daylight here has some weird way of distorting some colours :(

I used the sketch over at Papertake Weekly as my inspiration. Adding the tear off tickets to the side of this hug-able - I Lovs You Dis Much -scarecrow from Rick St Dennis.

It's no accident that the die cut used to mat him on is the X-cut parentheses, symbolising hugs in the cyber world.

The sentiment "One Size Fits All" was computer generated and that and it's mat were die cut. Some acetate secured between the layers.
